30 Years Ago: Lebanese Politicians Granted General Amnesty For War Crimes
For many, August 26, 1991 is a day to remember. On this day, 30 years ago, the House of Representatives issued General Amnesty Law No. 84/91 that gave our horrible politicians clemency for their war crimes against the people and the state. The law relieved politicians and warlords any responsibility from crimes committed prior to March 28, 1991. Thirty years later, and we are still ruled by the same gang of thugs who protect each other at any cost.
The lack of accountability 30 years ago has paved the way for our political ruling class to repeatedly kill, starve, steal, and pillage with no consequences in sight. For the 100,000 who were killed throughout the long war and the millions who were displaced, justice was never served.
For over a year now, there have been no investigations regarding the August 4 blast and no one has been held accountable for the devastation it brought the country. Investigations are constantly being delayed as talks about lifting immunities are near.
We can only hope we do not suffer the same fate we did 30 years ago.
