A Week After Her Murder, Lilian’s Killers Still Roam Free
It has been over one week since Dr. Lilian Alwah was shot with a PKM machine gun. The force of the 30 bullets caused Lilian’s body to disintegrate into tidbits, yet her known killers still roam free.
In what is being described by the perpetrators as an “honor killing,” the mother of three was allegedly savagely murdered by her brother-in-law and his son in front of her husband and brother. It is unclear if her husband and brother are implicated, as she had previously filed for a divorce that she was never granted.
Women and girls have fallen victim to heinous so-called “honor” killings and crimes by tribes and other patriarchal communities. These crimes are widely underreported, and definitely not sufficiently prosecuted.
Dr. Lilian was the editor in chief of Al Fursan poetry magazine. She was loved by many. May she rest in peace, and may her killers be punished beyond the fullest extent of a law that routinely lets down women.
Until the laws force public attitudes to change, women and girls will continue to die, and killers will continue to roam free.
