Telecoms Minister Suggests Selling User Data For Profit
In a recent televised interview on “Beirut Al Yawm”, Minister of Telecommunications Johnny Corm suggested selling user data to private companies for profit.
Corm’s suggestion aims to increase the Ministry’s revenues by giving private companies, such as local media companies, access to people’s personal information. He also brushed up on the possibility of data being sold ahead of the upcoming elections.
The policy, if implemented, is a violation of privacy. Although Corm insists that the process of selling user data will be “ethical” and studied by a newly formed security committee, we are left feeling unease.
