Once Again, Lebanon Is Witnessing An Outbreak Of Wildfires

Massive wildfires erupted across Lebanon this past weekend, swallowing everything in their way. The unexplained fires raged in Beit Mery, Bekaa, and South Lebanon, with the flames nearing residential areas and destroying much of the region’s biodiversity. It took Civil Defense units several hours and an excruciating amount of effort to control the flames due to limited resources. Army helicopters aided in putting out Beit Mery’s fire.

Sadly, according to Middle East Eye, someone died as a result of the flames reaching a warehouse in Jdeideh.

Many expressed their concern on social media over the spread of the fires as they destroyed Lebanon’s expanse of biodiverse forests. Among them is Zebqin Valley in the South of Lebanon, which extends over 15km worth of flora and fauna.

Helicopters have been swarming for several days now, alongside the tireless efforts of the Civil Defense and many volunteers to contain the fires and prevent them from spreading further.

Some have even shared to social media pictures of ash covering their cars in Beirut due to the uncontrollable fires.

Lebanon has witnessed many outbreaks of wildfires over the last few years, and despite the frequency of this occurrence, the government remains idle and refuses to implement an action plan to battle these outbreaks that continue to take lives, destroy homes, and erase what is left of Lebanon’s natural diversity.

A big thank you to the Civil defense and volunteers for their collective efforts to contain the fires.
