4 Lebanese Theatre Companies Keeping The Cultural Scene Alive

Despite the obstacles created by the host of problems in Lebanon and a complete lack of governmental funding for arts, local theatre practitioners have never given up on their passion.

Alongside many collectives, NGOs and performing arts spaces who nurture and support arts and artists in our community, here are four active Lebanese theatre companies keeping the cultural scene alive:

1. Zoukak

Launched in 2006, Zoukak theatre company is dedicated to producing artistic creations that reflect on social and political issues. Apart from creating theatre performances, Zoukak’s team provides multiple workshops and training programs supporting local emerging artists.

2. Warshe

Warshe is a performing arts hub founded by Mohammad Itani and Wissam Achy. The company’s troupe was seen perform for the first time ever in November 2021 on the stage of Al Madina Theatre, with an original play entitled “Exodoi”.

3. Homemade Theater

Created in 2016 by theatre director Shady Haber, this performing arts company produces plays performed by its graduating trained actors under the supervision of its founder and actress Maya Sebaaly.

4. Khayal
