Post edit: The candidate is the youngest female running for parliament.
Yesterday, the filing deadline for Lebanon’s upcoming parliamentary elections closed with 1043 candidates running for the 128 available seats.
Of the 155 women who are running for elections is the youngest candidate, 26-year old Verena Rachad el Amil who is running for a seat in Metn. She is originally from the village of Rmeish in Bint Jbeil.
An international law masters graduate from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, El Amil was previously the president of the secular club at her alma matter USJ. She then went on to occupy the role of media officer at the student-led political network, Mada.
She became a familiar face during the uprising, participating in various anti-regime protests and speaking on various matters such as the shortages of medication and the need for economic reforms.
Compared to the dinosaurs we currently have in parliament, this is refreshing to see.
