Named after the warrior queen who led armies into battle in 4th century Syria, Mavia Bakery is a social enterprise sourdough bakery in Gemmayze that is baking delicious bread and so much more.
Pronounced Mawiya, the bakery works out of a cooperative kitchen and only hires women from marginalized communities.
At this quaint spot, you’ll find a delectable brunch menu featuring eggs on sourdough bagels, shakshuka, and quite possibly the best grilled cheese sandwich in town! They serve brunch from Tuesdays to Saturdays 9 AM – 5 PM.
On Fridays, they fire up their wood-fire ovens and bake delicious pizzas unlike any you’ve ever tasted. With toppings like shankleesh, potatoes and garlic confit, or even kishik and awarma, these Lebanese-inspired pizzas are heavenly. (They also have classic options for the conservative eaters.)
Those with a sweet-tooth will be pleased to hear that they also have a selection of pastries, brioche buns, cakes, and other treats.
Due to the worldwide wheat crisis, Mavia recently shifted from using imported wheat to Lebanese wheats, asking customers for patience as they perfect the fluffiness of these loaves.
You can find this amazing bakery in Gemmayzeh’s Alleyway (right next to Aaliya’s Books).
