At-Home Cholera Stool PCR Tests Now Available in Lebanon

Lebanon has a reputation of you being able to get virtually anything delivered to your doorstep, from a Bic lighter at 3 AM to srafeh for your USD. And medical testing is apparently no different.

As cholera continues to spread across the country, medical centers have stepped in to provide services related to the virus (and to also capitalize on the gaps in healthcare services).

One such provider, Liberty Medical Centre in Beirut is offering a cholera stool PCR tests that can be done in the comfort of one’s own home. The tests, which cost a whopping $43, use a stool sample to quickly analyze the presence or non-presence of cholera.

Cholera bacterium has been found in sewage systems across the country, and the Ministry of Health has also identified contaminated crop-watering sources in the North. With the absence of an adequate plan to deal with the crises, residents are left to look for private solutions such as these to deal with the spread of the disease.
