After last night’s earthquake, and with aftershocks and other complications expected in the coming days, it would probably be useful to familiarize ourselves with some of the instructions the Lebanese Civil Defense has written up in case of earthquakes. Before – Monitoring household items: ensuring that light fixtures, closets, pictures, and other items are well positioned and will not cause any immediate danger. – Picking safe spots inside the house: under strong tables or near an interior wall, away from windows, mirrors, and anything that may break. – Picking safe spots outside the house: away from buildings, trees, utility poles, coastal areas, and rivers. Other Preparations – Make sure to have an exit path – Decide on a family meeting spot in case you aren’t together at the time of the quake – Make sure everyone is informed of these instructions and your plans – Prepare a quick emergency getaway bag and first aid kit. During If you’re inside – Do not go outside or to a shelter, as staying inside is safest. – Hide under a strong table or a door frame or an interior corner until the quake is done. – Stay away from windows, balconies, items attached to the ceiling, and walls with shelves. – Cover your head and face what is available or with your hand. – Cut off all power sources. – Do not use the elevator. If you’re outside, in open air – Stay away from buildings, walls, trees, utility poles, and metal signs If you’re inside a public place – Do not run or push towards the exit door, to avoid a stampede. Look for the emergency exit. – Stay away from anything that looks like it may fall. If you’re inside a car – Do not drive fast or dangerously, as steering becomes much harder. – Park your car to the right of the road, away from buildings, walls, and utility poles to ensure easy access for first responders. – Do not cross bridges or tunnels, or hide under or inside them. If you’re in an elevator – Immediately click on the nearest floor and quickly exit the elevator and take the stairs to a safe spot. After If injured – Stay calm – Try to inform someone of where you are, with any means possible. – Evacuate the residents based on the previously discussed plan. If you are not injured – Check on all family members. – If you have the necessary expertise, try to administer first aid or put out fires. – Cut all power sources. – Evacuate any injured people depending on the danger of their injuries. – Do not touch any wires. – Do not use the phone except in emergency circumstances, especially mobile devices due to possible gas leaks and to prevent the network from overloading. – Listen to the radio and follow the instructions of the relevant authorities. – Prepare yourself for aftershocks and leave the house before they occur.
