Baklava: The Lebanese Woman-Led Dating App For Arabs

There’s a new dating app in stores and the message behind it is pretty amazing.

Baklava (LOVE the name) is the first and only app for Arabs, dedicated to creating a free and safe social space that aims to keep Arab culture alive.

The founder and CEO is Leila Muhaizen, an LA-based Lebanese entrepreneur who graduated from the American University of Beirut with a BA in Media and Communications. Her goal is to not only break the stigma around online dating in the region, but to also connect the Arab community no matter where they are in the world.

But Baklava is not just for finding love because there is a besties mode that is designed to help you bond and build friendships with other like-minded people.

The project was launched back in December 2020 and has two headquarters in Los Angeles and Detroit.

So, we decided to sign up just to see how this app works.

Sign up with all your information, from your background to your height to your nationality and where you’re based before you select your intention: friendship, relationship, or even marriage. Here’s where it gets interesting.

There are a few prompts for you to answer that can show up on your profile. Our favorites are “Best way to win over my Baba?” and “Doctor, engineer, or disappointment?” – and we think these are pretty good conversations starters.

The app is user-friendly and straightforward. When you start swiping (up and down, not left and right), you’ll see small icons on the right side of the screen where you can either like someone’s profile or reject them after checking their information.

Make sure to leave someone a comment on their profile to make their day!

So, who’s signing up?
