Girl Up x Shemsi: Fighting Period Poverty One Panty At A Time

Girl Up is a girl-centered initiative that is uniting girls from all over the world to help them advance, develop, and create opportunities that will pave the way for women and girls everywhere.

Their community group in Lebanon is collaborating with Shemsi to provide sustainable and equitable solutions to period poverty with their highly absorbent period underwear.

According to Girl Up, menstruating individuals consume upwards of 300 pads per year. Pads contain pulp fibers, synthetic polymers, super-absorbent polymers, and polyethylene—all of which are environmental contaminants that are not properly disposed of.

Period poverty has been at a worrying rise in Lebanon, as many are left unable to afford sanitary pads or other menstrual products due to the dollarization of basic goods on the market.

At local pharmacies, you’ll find menstrual products (that are considered of decent quality) such as Nana and Private currently costing as follows:

Nana:
– Normal wings: 170,000LBP/pack
– Goodnight: 290,000LBP/pack

Private:
– Normal wings: 130,000LBP/pack
– Goodnight: 130,000LBP/pack

On average, a woman may need anywhere between 3 to 5 packs per month, making her monthly costs range anywhere between 520,000LBP to 1,160,000LBP. This has been a major issue for low-income households, especially those with multiple women and girls.

For this reason, Shemsi is bringing sustainable solutions with their highly absorbent period underwear, which costs around a few months’ worth of sanitary products and can last up to 2 years if cared for properly.

Check out their website to skim their different options, and their sizing goes up to 3XL. You can also select the absorption strength of the panties if you tend to have a heavy flow.
