Anxious In Beirut: New Lebanese Movie In Cinemas Soon

“Anxious in Beirut” is a compelling documentary film that intimately captures the experiences of Beirut’s residents over the past three years. Written, directed, and edited by Zaharia Jaber, the feature-length film chronicles the impacts of the intersecting crises and August 4 explosion on residents of an ever-anxious city.

The film’s website describes the film as an attempt by the director to give a coherent story to the city, and part of an “ever-present desire to capture, record, and understand Beirut, and by extension himself.”

The movie focuses on four main events during the last few years: revolution / plague/ city wide destruction / economic collapse. This is presented under the belief that these events “have happened before, will happen again, are part of the cyclical nature of this city. The differing details only give rise to new observable symptoms and new forms of necessary adaptability, to an older more inherent systemic problem.”

The film is also produced by Jumana Saadeh, an independent Jordanian documentary filmmaker and producer. The film has received funding from Al Jazeera English and Witness.

Anxious in Beirut was part of the line-up for this year’s Metropolis International Documentary Film Festival, where high demand for the film’s initial screening prompted the festival to set up a bonus screening the next day. Now, this highly anticipated film is set to land in Lebanese cinemas around the country. To keep up with its release date, you can follow their Instagram page.
