While Lebanon’s iconic Toum sauce (garlic paste) has long been a favorite amongst locals, we’re happy to announce that its renown is now transcending borders! The popular culinary magazine Taste Atlas has crowned Lebanese Toum the title of ‘Best Sauce in the World 2023.’
A staple on the Lebanese mezza table, toum is most traditionally enjoyed alongside rotisserie or charcoal grilled chicken, shawarma, and taouk. But realistically, the condiment is a perfect dip for anything from crispy French fries to kibbe nayye.
What distinguishes Toum from other garlic sauces, such as aioli, is its distinctive consistency. The slow addition of flavorful olive oil results in unmatched creaminess, elevating its taste to a league of its own. Here’s a good recipe for the deliciously versatile sauce.
In traditional households, the meticulous use of a mortar and pestle to crush the garlic is a cherished ritual, lending a depth of flavor and texture that machines can’t replicate.
Earlier this month, Lebanon’s iconic breakfast, the manouche, was branded “an emblematic culinary practice in Lebanon” and subsequently added to UNESCOs Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
So raise your spoons in celebration of the new pride of Lebanon, because we all know that everything tastes better with toum!
