Lebanon bids farewell to the talented and imaginative artist, Hussein Madi, who passed away on January 17, 2024, at the age of 85. Known for his incredible creativity in painting, sculpting, and printmaking, Madi’s journey through the world of art was as bold and expressive as his creations.
Born in 1938 in Chebaa, South Lebanon, Madi’s artistic path unfolded against the backdrop of modern European influences, drawing inspiration from the likes of Matisse and Picasso.
Having studied in both Beirut and Rome, Madi’s artistic exploration extended beyond conventional boundaries. His advanced research on Arabic cultural heritage and Egypt during his time in Rome showcased a commitment to unraveling the rich tapestry of his roots. Upon returning to Lebanon in 1986, he shared his knowledge by teaching sculpture and engraving at the Institute of Fine Arts, Lebanese University.
Throughout his lifetime, Madi earned recognition and accolades, including the Sursock Museum 5th Salon Prize for Painting (1965–66), the 8th Salon’s Prize for Sculpture from the Italian Cultural Centre (1968/69), and the First Prize for Engraving in Citta di Lecce, Italy (1974). His leadership as the President of the Association of Lebanese Artists in 1982 and 1992 attests to his enduring influence in shaping the local art scene.
As we bid farewell to the man who painted with passion and sculpted with soul, let us celebrate the vivacity of Hussein Madi’s legacy—a legacy that transcends borders, fusing tradition with modernity in a harmonious artistic symphony. May his creative spirit continue to inspire generations to come.
