Under the theme of “Challenging the Status Quo,” the American Community School Beirut (ACS) proudly hosted the 20th annual Model United Nations Conference LEBMUN. The opening ceremony took place on Friday, February 23rd, 2024, and featured keynote speaker Zeina Khodr, a senior correspondent at Al Jazeera news.
Delegates from grades 6-12 had a feel of how the general assembly of the United Nations works for three days, during which they emulated UN sessions tackling subjects ranging from income inequality to the question of navigating the ethical dilemma of artificial intelligence.
This iteration of LEBMUN was also unique in that it marked the third year of the MUN outreach program, ACS’s partnership with local public schools in Beirut. This allowed for 25 participants from other schools to take part in this prestigious Model United Nations conference. The outreach initiative aimed to foster inclusivity and broaden the horizons of students with limited access to such forums. These participants brought diverse perspectives, enriching the overall discourse at LEBMUN.
This holistic approach signifies ACS’s commitment to empowering the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate a complex and ever-changing global landscape.
