After major successes in Jordan and Palestine, the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN) is now in Lebanon. The latest project of this Arab initiative, Together for Lebanon’s Olive Trees, aims to plant 2,000 olive trees and revive lands hit by enemy aggressions.
The APN is an independent non-profit that works to protect the environment and natural resources across the Arab world. Founded in 2003, APN focuses on the environmental damage caused by war, occupation, and neglect. It partners with regional and global organizations to drive change.
The initiative officially launched on Friday, April 25, 2025, with a ceremony at the Engineers’ Syndicate in Beirut. It was held under the patronage of Agriculture Minister Dr. Nizar Hani, in partnership with the Arab Network for Food Sovereignty (ANFS).
Although the launch was in April, the work began in February with 200 trees planted across farms in the Nabatieh Governorate. This was the first step in rebuilding Lebanon’s olive sector, especially in the country’s south.
From October 2023 until November 2024, Lebanon faced horrific enemy aggressions that devastated its agriculture, resulting in the destruction of over 12% of olive farms in the south and Bekaa. These areas make up around 36% of national production.
The attacks sparked fires that burned over 65,000 trees and caused millions of dollars in damage. Many farmers were displaced.
The project aims to replant affected lands, support farmers, protect Lebanon’s olive heritage, and strengthen national food sovereignty.
APN President Razan Zeaiter said: “Tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, we’ll plant 2,000 olive trees in southern Lebanon—by hand and from the heart—in a Lebanese-Arab campaign for everyone who loves this land.”
Agriculture Minister Nizar Hani added: “We have a real chance to stand by our farmers and revive agriculture across Lebanon. I invite all organizations to join us on the ground.”
On Saturday, there was a big celebration in the town of Qana in southern Lebanon! It brought together farmers, their families, and local associations.
The Qana municipality, APN team, and engineer Hassan Al-Geagea also joined. He confirmed that this project is just the beginning and will expand to include other crops across Lebanon.
