Aley Municipality Cracks Down on Littering with New $100 Fines

In a necessary step to tackle the ongoing trash problem, the Municipality of Aley has introduced a $100 fine for anyone caught littering on the streets.

Mayor Wajdi Murad told MTV: “We honestly don’t know what more we can do” about people who keep dumping their garbage everywhere. Despite repeated warnings and cleanup efforts, the issue persisted, so the municipality decided it was time for stricter action.

Cameras have now been installed around the area to monitor violations. When someone is caught littering, they’re contacted directly and fined. If the vehicle isn’t from Aley, the fine is issued based on the car’s license plate. The penalty? 8.9 million Lebanese Lira (roughly $100).

Murad said he believes this kind of financial pressure might be the only way to change people’s habits. As he put it, “Some people won’t get the message unless it hits their wallet.”

The collected fines will go toward supporting the municipality’s cleaning efforts. And this is just the beginning. The town has already stepped up its sanitation operations, added more cleaning staff, and residents are starting to notice a real difference.

As long as our roads keep turning into dumping grounds, Aley’s approach is one worth spreading to every town.
