Zahle Officially Recognized as a World City of Wine!

Zahle has officially been designated a “World City of Wine” by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), a major milestone for Lebanon’s agricultural and cultural sectors.

The designation, effective as of April 2025, recognizes Zahle’s historic role in viticulture and winemaking, and its continued leadership in Lebanon’s wine industry.

The achievement stems from a detailed application submitted by former Zahle mayor Assaad Zgheib and Monir El Tini, head of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Zahle and the Bekaa. The file submitted to the OIV included extensive data on vineyards, the number of wineries, and longstanding contributions. It recorded Zahle’s longstanding role in Lebanon’s wine sector and its leadership in winemaking.

The current municipality adopted and supported the initiative, working closely with Lebanon’s Minister of Agriculture and the ministry’s technical teams. After fieldwork, studies, and coordination with local producers, the OIV officially notified Lebanon of its decision.

Louis Lahoud, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, described the recognition as a strategic win for Lebanon.

“This designation not only affirms Zahle’s agricultural and cultural identity,” he said, “but also opens new prospects for Lebanon’s wine industry and strengthens its position in global vine and wine production.”

President Joseph Aoun also congratulated Lebanon and Zahle on this international recognition. He highlighted the significance of this achievement for the country’s agricultural and cultural heritage.

Today, Zahle’s name stands proudly on the international wine map. A recognition that reflects the efforts of producers, officials, and an entire region rooted in tradition and excellence.

🍇🍷🇱🇧 Congratulations to Zahle, to Lebanese wine, and to everyone who made this possible.
