Illegal Kiosks Removed From Jounieh Highway Ahead of Expansion Project

The Jounieh Municipality launched a campaign to clear violations from public property and roads across the city, targeting encroachments on the Jounieh highway and Maameltein Street. Municipal police began removals after issuing warnings two weeks ago.

The plan aims to ease traffic, curb unlicensed activity, and boost safety as part of a broader “Nahdat Jounieh” revival project.

Parliament’s Public Works Committee recently announced nearly $40 million to widen the Jounieh highway. MP Sajih Attieh said the Public Works Ministry secured funding for expropriations and expansion. He described the project as a needed step to tackle daily gridlock.

Moreover, coverage from local broadcasters echoed the funding details and scope. The ministry expects work to start soon at the Beirut entrance to Jounieh. Studies are reportedly complete, paving the way for land acquisitions and construction.

Clearing illegal obstacles helps reopen shoulders and sidewalks now. It also prepares corridors for crews and equipment once expansion begins. Stricter enforcement is coming around ramps, service roads, and storefronts, along with towing and removal of lane-blocking structures.

However, expansion alone won’t fix everything. Commuters still need reliable alternatives during works. Officials referenced broader transport measures alongside the widening plan.

We’ll watch for bus lanes, better crossings, and clearer signage as works roll out. What do you think about this expansion project in Jounieh?
