First Lady Nehmat Aoun Opens Up About Fashion and State Spending Rumors

In her first media interview with the youth on LBCI, First Lady Nehmat Aoun spoke openly about a sensitive topic that has recently stirred debate: her style and public appearances. Since President Joseph Aoun took office, attention has focused not only on her presence but also on her refined, classic fashion sense. Much of the buzz centered on claims that her “luxurious looks” were all by designer Elie Saab.

The interviewer addressed the matter directly (loosely translated):

“There’s been some criticism of your appearances, and to be frank… people say the First Lady is always dressed in Elie Saab, always in costly, luxurious outfits. Some are asking: is the state treasury covering the expense of these looks? What’s your response?”

The First Lady answered with candor:

“I want to reassure everyone , not a single cent from the state treasury goes toward my appearances. Absolutely nothing.”

She went on to reveal that from her very first day as First Lady, world-renowned Lebanese designer Elie Saab personally reached out to her. He offered his atelier’s services in handling her official appearances as a gesture of support and faith in Lebanon. She expressed her deep gratitude to him.

But she also made it clear that Saab isn’t the only one. Many Lebanese designers, both well-known and emerging, have offered their talent to help her present herself in style.

“I won’t name them one by one, because I don’t want to forget anyone or not give them their due. But they take care of my daily looks as well as my appearances at events and festivals, and they always make sure I look my best. From the bottom of my heart, I thank them for standing by me and for the beautiful image they help me project.”

Her message was clear: the First Lady’s looks are not funded by the state, but are instead the work of Lebanese designers. The interview revealed a candid, down-to-earth side of Nehmat Aoun, who emphasized that transparency is a priority for her, and that her elegance is also a showcase of Lebanese creativity in fashion.
