The First Spot Dedicated to This Beiruti Delicacy: Ouzy!

Ever heard of Ouzy? It’s a traditional Beiruti dish that not many non-Beirutis know about. If you’re like me and have no idea what Ouzy is but really want to try it, there’s a spot dedicated to this local delicacy.

First things first…WTF is Ouzy?

Ouzy, also spelled Ouzi, is a classic Beiruti savory dish often served during special occasions. It’s comforting and flavorful, combining spiced rice, tender meat, nuts, and vegetables, all baked inside a delicate pastry shell. The result is a crispy, golden exterior with a warm, spiced, and savory filling inside.

What makes it truly distinctive is that the spiced rice is wrapped in a flaky baklava-style pastry, creating the perfect contrast between savory filling and crispy dough.

If you can’t make it, here’s where you can try it

There’s a spot that specialized in making this beloved dish called Ouzy Beirut.

Dedicated to keeping traditions alive, this spot in Jal El Dib serves it exactly the way it’s meant to be. Golden, flaky, and packed with spiced rice, meat, and crunchy nuts.

They make different types of Ouzy, including variations stuffed with meat, chicken, or veggies, served with a seasonal salad or khyar w laban.

They also turned the traditional Beiruti dish into a dessert! Not sure if that means it’s just baklewa…but it sounds good regardless.

There are other traditional bites you can enjoy off their menu, like their traditional msakhan wraps. Also served with a seasonal salad or khyar w laban.

If you’re a Beiruti who has been craving this traditional bite or you’re curious about what it tastes like, then you know where to go!
