Reading Remedy: An Initiative Bringing Libraries to Hospital Waiting Rooms

Hospital waiting rooms are often spaces of anxiety, uncertainty, and long stretches of idle time. Reading Remedy, a non-profit initiative, sees these moments differently, offering books as a remedy to patients and visitors.

Created by bookworms (who also happen to be healthcare professionals), this initiative combines a love of literature with a deep understanding of the stress and uncertainty people face in hospitals.

By filling waiting rooms with carefully donated books, the initiative offers more than just distraction: it provides moments of calm, mental engagement, and even comfort, reminding everyone that reading can be a quiet form of healing.

So far, they’ve opened up small libraries at Medical 2000 Hospital in Choueifat and St. George Hospital in Hadath. Every book on the shelves has been generously donated by fellow book lovers. The colleciton ranges from children’s stories and encyclopedias to English classics and Arabic literature.

Reading Remedy hopes to expand to more hospitals in the coming months!
