Meet Beirut’s Perfect Little Bakery Open Since 1948
If you’re strolling through Hamra and catch the delightful smell of freshly made manakish, chances are it’s coming from one of the oldest bakeries in the area. Kabouchieh Bakery, a local gem since 1948, is the go-to spot for warm, cheesy bites, fluffy kaak, and perfectly baked treats.
No matter how many new bakeries pop up in Beirut, the OGs will always have the yummiest bakes. Maybe it’s decades of experience, or maybe the older generation has a secret recipe for oven-baked perfection they just won’t share.
Most of these iconic spots are low-key and don’t run social media accounts, but the bakery decided to start posting about all the delicious bites they have to offer.
What’s on the menu?
So many manakish to choose from (all under $3, unless you go for a mashrouha). Beyond the classic cheese and zaatar, they also offer labneh with makdous, kashkaval, halloumi, and more.
Did you know they also make manakish jreesh? If you’re not familiar, it’s a southern Lebanese specialty made with cracked wheat (jreesh), giving the manoushe a unique, hearty texture. Traditionally mixed with sesame and Nigella seeds, this recipe has been cherished for generations, and the aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water.
Their meat pies and fatayer are a must-try for anyone who loves classic recipes baked the traditional way.
And if you’re into variety, Kabouchieh’s kaake trabolsiye is just as worth trying. Whether you like it plain, with zaatar, or loaded with cheese.
We’re ending on a sweet note with their bite-sized fruit jam tarts, flaky croissants, and cakes, all baked fresh daily with buttery layers and just the right amount of sweetness.
