Apparently, lesbianism is just low self-esteem in disguise. At least, that’s what Lebanese clinical psychologist Khalil Habchi wants you to believe.
On a recent episode of MTV’s podcast “Behind the Mirror”, Habchi argued that women who don’t feel attractive to men tend to “turn to” other women.
He went on to “explain” that when men fail to “activate” women (yes, he actually used that word) or respond to their emotional cues, women allegedly start seeking validation from female friends. According to him, this is where same-sex attraction comes from. And don’t worry, he insists this is backed by “numerous studies.”
So, if you’ve ever asked your bestie if your bangs look good… congratulations, you’re apparently a lesbian now.
We’re not sure when the last time Habchi cracked open a peer-reviewed journal was. Back in 1991, the American Psychological Association (APA) actually published an article on heterosexist bias. Maybe ChatGPT forgot to correct him while he was prepping for the podcast. Betseer.
The APA points out that scientific research can be deeply shaped by heterosexist bias. This is when human experience is framed strictly in heterosexual terms, which often leads to ignoring, invalidating, or outright pathologizing same-sex behaviors and relationships.
In other words, claims like Habchi’s aren’t just scientifically flimsy. They reflect a long history of research that dismissed or degraded LGBTQ+ experiences.
Given that the Lebanese Order of Psychologists cites the APA multiple times in its own ethical guidelines, it’s hard to see how Habchi’s comments align with professional standards. His statements are outdated, stigmatizing, and harmful to the LGBTQ+ community.
Psychologists who make claims this unfounded and damaging should be held accountable for violating the ethical principles of their profession.
We call on the Lebanese Order of Psychologists to clarify their stance on such statements and to ensure LGBTQ individuals remain protected in mental health spaces. Also, nice to see MTV…MTVing.
