Le Monnot Theater Introduces Audio Description, Moving Towards Accessiblity for All

Beirut’s beloved Le Monnot Theater has just launched a project called al-wusool w-al shomouliya (“accessibility and inclusivity”), making its performances more accessible to people with disabilities. The official launch is taking place on October 30, 2025 at their theater in Achrafieh.

Led by its director Josyane Boulos, the theater is committed to social responsibility, striving to create an inclusive cultural space where everyone can enjoy live performances.

By implementing this project, Le Monnot sets a new standard for accessibility in Lebanon’s arts scene, ensuring that theater is no longer limited by physical or sensory barriers by adopting the latest assistive technologies that ensure a comprehensive and integrated artistic experience. It is the first of its kind in Lebanon.

The initiative stems from Boulos’s firm belief that the fine arts in general, and theater in particular, are a right for everyone. She explained that the first phase of the project introduces audio description technology for visually impaired audiences, allowing them to fully experience the action, emotions, and visual storytelling on stage.

The second phase will soon provide sign language translation, integrating these services into the theater’s regular programming.

Audio Description

Visually impaired audiences can follow every detail of the performance through wireless headphones. A specialist provides a live narration of the action, décor, and actors’ movements.

Sign Language Interpretation

Professional translators will provide sign language interpretation in designated areas of the theater. This enables deaf attendees to follow both dialogue and performance. This phase is currently under study.

Touch Tours

Before each show, visually impaired visitors can explore the set and costumes through touch. This offers a deeper understanding of the artistic details.

Motivated by international examples of cultural accessibility, Boulos developed this local initiative and collaborated with international and Lebanese experts to train over 20 technicians and translators. The theater plans to present one fully accessible show per month, equipped with these facilities.
