After a wedding inside Lebanon’s protected Jeita Grotto sparked public outrage, Minister of Tourism Laura Lahoud announced that the caves will be temporarily closed for inspection.
In the video, she reiterated the statement previously issued by the Ministry of Tourism. Lahoud said she was verbally informed that an event would take place at the grotto, but clarified that the ministry never granted official permission.
While Imad Sfeir, a member of the Jeita Municipality and director of the grotto’s staff, claimed that the event “met all the required standards,” authorities have closed the grotto until further notice. Experts will conduct a thorough inspection to ensure the fragile rock formations remain undamaged.
Lahoud added that if experts discover any damage, the ministry will take the necessary legal and administrative action to protect the site.
