Following Disgusting Video, Malak Al Batata Shut Down by Health Authorities

A recent Al Jadeed report exposed disgusting health violations in Hamra’s Malak Al Batata, one of the city’s most popular Lebanese snacks.

The Ministry of Public Health has since issued an official closure order until the establishment meets proper health standards.

Reporters uncovered cockroach-infested stations, poor storage practices, and overall disgusting conditions. Footage from the kitchen at Malak Al Batata also showed dark, heavily reused cooking oil, also riddled with roaches.

The investigation sparked wider concern among the public, especially given how common Lebanese snacks are across the country. Many viewers questioned how often similar hygiene issues go unchecked in everyday eateries.

Open since 1969 though recently under new management, this popular snack is a go-to for an affordable meal.

‘The incident came less than a month after an alarming report revealed that Tannourine water contained dangerous bacteria. Although the water was later retested and deemed safe, it still raised concern over Lebanon’s lack of proper food safety monitoring (or lack thereof).
