Did You Know? There’s a Shop in Beirut Where Everything Is Free

Did you know there’s a shop in Beirut that doesn’t take any money when you want to buy something? That means any clothes, homeware, furniture, and more are all for free.

The Salt & Grain Exchange in Hadath follows a barter system, so technically, it’s not entirely free but at least you’re not paying with money. If you have items at home you no longer need, instead of tossing them out or letting them pile up, you can bring them to the shop and donate them. In return, you get to take whatever you like and actually need.

Pretty much everything!

Men’s and women’s clothing, sweaters, shoes in all sizes, furniture, homeware, books, electronics, toys, sports gear, small appliances, and even items for new moms. The space is big, organized, and full of clean, well-kept pieces.

Every donated item is assigned a value. Some pieces are worth 1 point, others 5, and special ones can go up to 10. Everything is color-coded, so you instantly know how many points each item earns you. These points become your “budget” to shop around the store. The signage is clear and makes browsing super easy.

You drop off your items at the counter, volunteers give them a quick check, and then calculate your points. While they’re doing that, you can grab a cup of coffee while you take a look around. Once you get your balance, you pick out whatever you need. And that’s the swap done.

There’s also a thoughtful touch called the Needs Wall: Anyone who needs something can post a request, and if someone comes in with that item, they donate it. It’s simple, clever, and a reminder of how supportive a community can be.

The Salt & Grain Exchange is located in Hadath, right next to Elie Moussan Salon. They’re open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM. For inquiries, call them on +961 81 688 761, and don’t forget to follow them on Instagram.
