Lebanese Filmmaker Marie-Rose Osta Wins Prestigious Award for “Someday, a Child”

Lebanese filmmaker Marie-Rose Osta took home the prestigious Golden Bear award for Best Short Film at the 2026 Berlin International Festival for her powerful film “Someday, a Child” (Yawman ma Walad).

The story follows a boy who has special powers that stop Israeli jets from waking him up from his sleep. His uncle helps him control his powers to appear “normal” until it becomes far out of his control.

Osta captures the child’s awakening to the world’s harsh realities and the first spark of resistance that follows. The fantastical elements of the film, combined with a real-world reality, enters the world of politically charged magical realism.

In her acceptance speech, Osta took the opportunity to make a statement about the ongoing aggressions against Lebanon and Palestine. She stated: “No child should need superpowers to survive a genocide empowered by veto powers and the collapse of international law. If this award means anything at all (…), let it mean that Lebanese and Palestinian children are not negotiable.”
