As evacuation warnings swept through Beirut’s southern suburbs, many families fled their homes in fear. But for this Lebanese woman, leaving was about more than her own safety. She couldn’t abandon her 40 cats.
“I couldn’t leave them. They’re living beings, their lives are just as important as mine,” she said. Despite the chaos and danger, she carried each cat down from her apartment, two at a time, and loaded them into her car. You can watch the full video here:
With no one to help, Hadyan managed everything on her own, bringing along a few bags of food and litter, but leaving all of her belongings behind. Her focus was on her cats, not material things.
“I didn’t care about clothes, money, or anything else,” she explained. She only had the clothes on her back and the cats in her car. Hadyan sees her cats as family. “If no one can leave their children behind, how can they leave these little ones?” she said. Even in the cramped conditions of temporary shelter, she thinks about them constantly, making sure they are safe and cared for.
