Lighting Design For Theatre Workshop Conducted by Alaa Minawi

The workshop aims at:
– Having a better knowledge in lighting design for theatre and performances.
– Discussing the importance of lighting design in the creation process.
– Discussing some clues in how the lighting design is approached conceptually.

The Applicants are preferred to have at least an interest in theatre or any other kind of live performances or concerts. A CV for each applicant is needed for admitting into the workshop; this is done to ensure that all the applicants are in a close experience and knowledge range concerning the subject matter. This helps in creating a stronger syllabus for the workshop.
No prior experience in lighting design is required.

The Workshop will be in two forms; theoretical and practical:

The Theoretical form:
The history of lighting design in theatre, how it started and evolved. Explaining the kinds of light projectors and the difference between them. Talking about the ways a director would think in dealing with lights, the interaction between the director and the lighting designer in the creation process, Getting texts, music, paintings and thinking of them in terms of lights.

The Practical form:
Demonstrating the light projectors. Each applicant or group of applicants will have time to do a small lighting design project.

About Alaa Minawi:

laa Minawi (b. Beirut, Lebanon) is a visual artist. Since 2006, He has worked in more than 150 performances in Lebanon and the Arab world as a lighting designer, technical director, and performer. He collaborated with many renowned artists as Robert Wilson, Jawad Al Assadi, Andrey Barteniv, Rafic Ali Ahmad, Hiba Qawwass, Tania Saleh, Nagy Souraty, Omar Rajeh, Lina Abyad, and others… He participated in several local and international theatre workshops. He joined many festivals in Kuwait, U.A.E. , Bahrain, Qatar, USA, and Canada.
In 2009 and 2010, he was asked to organize two street festivals. Since then, he also works as a festival coordinator.
He was the technical supervisor for Babel theatre in 2010 where he proposed a revolutionary plan to improve the theatre’s technical aspects. He is now the lighting designer of Babel Theatre.
In 2011 he supervised the technical process in the creation of a new dance space in Beirut (maqamat dance house)
alaa has a BA in Communication Arts from the Lebanese American University. He also has a lighting designer trainer’s certificate from RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts), London. He is in the process of getting another BA in Scenography from Østfold University, Norway.

He directed a theatrical performance; “The Slaughter/ Die Schlacht” written by Hiener muller, and in the process of directing a new one in addition to an instillation for 2012.

Special Formula:The Workshop will be for two hours every day for a span of five days.

It is possible that the language be in Arabic or English depending on the applicants’ background and preference.
