Nonna: The Best Pizza Place in Beirut Has Arrived



I’m a sucker for cute restaurant decor (food tastes better when it’s served in cozy, hopelessly adorable digs), and Nonna’s is all about this: dangling vintage light bulbs, a pizza bar, an entire wall lined with logs for the kitchen’s wood-burning pizza oven, and Italian kitchen utensils strung up on the wall like festive Christmas decorations. (Pro-tip, fools: boring restaurant decor is like a squandered opportunity in customer service.)

But enough about aesthetics, let me tell you about why Nonna’s pizza is so awesome.

1. The Truffled Mac n Cheese


I know what you’re thinking. I just told you this is the best pizza place in Beirut, and now I’m telling you about the mac and cheese. Let me explain. Nonna’s menu consists solely of pizza, salads, Italian appetizers (including Charcuterie, Caprese and Bufala Parma and Fig Salad), and one other critical thing: a singularly spectacular pasta dish that will change your life forever. And I’m only slightly exaggerating. Look, all I’m saying is that I was scraping at the bottom of this baked pasta dish like it was the first time I’d eaten food in 12 years. And that is why I can say with absolutely no reservations whatsoever that it’s worth going to Nonna’s pizza just for the mac n cheese alone. Just go and try it out. You’ll never doubt me again. Promise.

2. Goat Cheese Pizza


The chefs at Nonna are clearly not skimp about pizza toppings. This pizza consisted of: Goat cheese mix, tomato sauce, moutarde a l’ancienne and cherry tomatoes covered in a mountain of rocca leaves and topped off with a balsamic reduction. There was so much goat cheese on this pizza that, dare I say, there might have been too much of it. No, no, just forget I said that. You can’t *really* appreciate any food until you’ve literally bathed in a tub of it. So it’s all good.

3. Al Tartufo


Olive spread, mozzarella and bufala cheese, truffle oil, cherry tomatoes and fresh basil joined in perfect harmony on a crispy, doughy, freshly baked crust. Nonna’s pizza. You guys NAILED IT. And just a heads up: the waiter told me the menu changes every month so don’t blame me if this pizza isn’t available when you go. In sum, the only thing that comes close to expressing my new-found emotional attachment to Nonna’s pizza, is the 1989 hit song by Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville “I don’t know much, but I know I love you [Nonna Pizza] and that may be all I need to know.”
