5 Secret Santa Gift Ideas

Here are some gift ideas if you and your friends (or coworkers) are partaking in Secret Santa this year. This is a fun tradition—especially when it is a large group and the price cut-off is low. For the uninitiated, Secret Santa is an American holiday tradition whereby people are randomly assigned a person (usually names are drawn from a hat) to whom they anonymously give a present.

My general rule for Secret Santa gifts is to buy things that are “safe” – meaning: gifts that everyone will like. Or at the very least, re-giftable gifts.

1. Olive Oil Soap
The beauty benefits of olive oil have been hailed in tons of beauty magazines, and this is a great gift because you can support local Lebanese businesses – no need to buy any international brands!

2. Chocolate
This may seem like the easy way out, but I’m not taking about Kit Kat or Snickers. Who doesn’t love a present of luxury, quality chocolate? Again, there are so many fantastic artisanal chocolate makers in the country that you won’t be pressed for options.

3. Mugs
It can be really lame to receive a dumb mug for your secret Santa gift. But it can be really cool if you receive a great mug that is actually useful! I don’t know anyone who would turn their nose down at a cool thermos travel mug. Extra points if you fill it with Hersey kisses.

4. A book
Print is not dead! There is something so nice about opening a new book for the first time. Just search the New York Times best seller list and voila! You have the perfect Secret Santa gift. Remember: books will always outlast technology. Your kindle may one day go the way of the floppy disk. (If you don’t know what a floppy disk is, google it.)

5. Concert tickets for two
If the budget of your group’s Secret Santa is a bit higher, this could be the perfect gift. There is so much culture to consume in this city, and if you buy two tickets chances are that the person receiving the gift will take you with them. A win-win situation. Check out concerts and events being held around the country, here.
