This Guy Makes The Best Mfat’a Dessert In Beirut

This guy makes the traditional old Beiruti dessert, Mfat’a (mfat2a). Makari Sweets (حلويات المكاري) in Basta run by the talented owner, Abu Abdallah.

It’s made of tahini, sugar, turmeric, and pine nuts and takes over four hours to make one pot, which is usually hand-stirred for the whole time. Talk about muscles!

He’s one of the last remaining mfat’a shops in Beirut and is well known to locals. His family have been in the dessert business for over 100 years. He inherited the recipe from his father, and now his sons have also taken the recipe from him and opened their own shop not too far away!

He cooks up pretty big portions, which is to be expected for a Lebanese dish, and mfat’a lasts in the fridge for around a month, so you don’t need to worry about throwing it out as waste.

He’s located on the main street in Basta, so make sure you drop by and try this delicious dessert. His sons offer delivery services, you can order by calling: 01-643423.
