6 Things That Happen During Every Graduation Season In Lebanon

Graduation is a beautiful and hectic time for celebrations. Whether it’s a high school or a university graduation, no one likes to celebrate more than the Lebanese and well, no one is more hectic. Here are six things that happen during graduation season:

1. Trying to convince the administration that you need extra graduation tickets for your family

What do you mean I only get three tickets? I have 5 siblings, 7 aunts, 3 uncles, and 2 sets of grandparents!

2. W hala2 shou? Ma fh shi hek hek 😉 badna nefra7 fek(e)

Everyone seems to think that a degree and a 3arees/3aroos come hand in hand. God forbid you want to earn a living, find a job, travel, experience life…

3. Making it rain

Gala tickets, after-grad/prom tickets, ceremonies, receptions, dresses/suits, hair, makeup … *Googles how to sell a kidney *

4. “Let’s stay in touch! — Definitely!”

Spoiler alert: you won’t. Come on, do you really intend to stay in touch with that guy saved as “Math 201 dude” on your phone?

5. So many Tantes and their sons coming over to “nshrab ahwe”

If you’re a female, soon after you graduate every single tante you know will probably drop by “to have coffee” with your mom, and she just might drag along her son (who’s almost always an engineer) or he will be mentioned multiple times. It’s like your graduation is a declaration of your readiness to become a wife and a baby-maker.

6. Confusion, desperation, and finally…wasta

Yes, you graduated – congratulations! Now what? You don’t know what to do with your life, you’re not even sure this is the career you want to pursue, there are no jobs (none that meet your ridiculous $5000/month expectation at least), and eventually you settle for a job secured by someone who knows someone who knows someone…
