Lebanese People Tell Us Their First Date Horror Stories (Part II)

Dating in Lebanon isn’t easy. You could show up to a date only to realize that they are your distant cousin, or that they’re a functional alcoholic, or even that they have a really weird relationship with their mother. For the second time, we asked you to share with us your strangest first date experiences in Lebanon, and your stories did not disappoint, although the dates that inspired them clearly did.

“Told him I practice yoga. He asked if I’d be interested in doing ‘sexual yoga’.” – Maya, 24

“Her phone’s wallpaper is a picture of her face. That was all I needed to know to be sure that this girl wasn’t for me.” – Mike, 27

“I had been single for such a long time that I finally let one of my friend’s ‘set me up’ with someone, especially given the fact that the person she wanted to set me up with was a foreigner, and I’ve had really bad luck with Lebanese men, so I was more optimistic than usual about this particular date. We met up at a house party that the friend who wanted us to meet was hosting, and at first, things went well, despite the fact that he was wearing flip flops in the middle of winter. Then, he pulled out a bottle of vodka from his backpack, and started drinking it straight from the bottle. Only then I realized that his fingernails were long, like really long, and had layers of dirt underneath them – and he kept biting his nails throughout the night so I was disgusted just thinking about how much dirt he was eating. Safe to say I lost all interest in dating him, let alone kissing him.” – Raya, 30

“Date went fine, but as he was on his way to drop me off, he stopped by Barbar and got shawarma. He gets out of the car, orders his shawarma and starts chatting to men on the street. I must have been waiting there for 30 minutes. I got out and took a service home.” – Tammy, 28

“She started taking pictures of me and putting it up on her InstaStory. We had literally just met. She put hearts all around my face and shared it with her entire Insta-following.” – Ziad, 29

“We were sitting at a bar in Hamra and it was the first time we had met up alone. He asked to see pictures of my mom, which I found really weird but I showed him anyway. He kept scrolling through the pictures and telling me how pretty she is, just completely staring at the photos, it’s like I wasn’t there at all. I think he has a thing for older women and he goes out with younger girls just to find a way to reach their mothers.” – Sima, 24

“I was on a date with a girl who asked if we could have tequila shots. I knew that even the mention of tequila makes me nauseous, but I wanted to impress her so I took the shot with her and ran to the bathroom to vomit, but there was someone inside and I didn’t make it in time.” – Sam, 27

“He thought it would be cute to take me on the ferris wheel. I have a severe fear of heights and was sweating and shaking throughout the whole thing. Once we got to the bottom, I vomited and we had to stay in the carriage for another 5 minutes until the ride was over.” – Mia, 19
