Naji Diab Fleiti hanged himself in his home in Ersal, Bekaa on Saturday November 30, 2019.
The 40-year old father had been struggling to care for his children, 6-year old Raneem and 1-year old Mohammad, and had fallen into debt that amounts to 700,000 Lebanese Lira.
His wife told
Annahar that on his final day, Naji was unable to buy milk for Mohammad, and when Raneem asked him for 1,000 Lira to buy a man’ouche, he ignored her unable to admit that he didn’t have the almost negligible amount.
Fleiti had previously been enlisted in the army, but had to discontinue service when his wife fell ill and he was forced to get a job closer to home in order to help care for the children. He briefly worked at a stonemasonry but lost his job after the company shut down.
News of his death broke our hearts and reminded us of the heart wrenching tale of
George Zreik who set himself on fire after not being able to pay his children’s school tuitions. May their soul rest in peace.
