Update: Hamra’s Red House Is Now Protected By Ministry of Culture
Remember the 18th century home on Abdelaziz Street in Hamra that was being demolished just two days ago?
After photos circulated of its partial demolition, the Minister of Culture Abbas Mortada has placed it on the protection list, preventing further destruction without the ministry’s approval.
The home, aptly nicknamed The Red House was partially constructed in the 18th century with the rest of it completed during the early 20th century by Abdo Rebeiz.
We do not know how long this protected status will last, but it is a win for now nonetheless.
