American University Of Beirut To Fire 1/4 Of Staff Due To Economic Crisis

As the economic crisis continues to worsen in the country, the American University of Beirut finds itself in one of the worst financial positions in the establishment’s history.

The future and livelihoods of many AUB employees is currently at stake as the university looks to dismiss 22 to 25% of its staff, stated President Fadlo Khury.

Jobs will be cut mostly from administrative posts at both the university and the hospital (AUBMC), Khuri told L’Orient-Le Jour. He also explained that the planned construction of the new hospital will be suspended.

Earlier in May, President Khuri sent out a lengthy and detailed email to faculty, staff, and students, outlining the many hurdles that the university is currently trying to overcome.

Khuri said that staff would be asked to accept a reduction of 10 to 15% of their salaries. This will be voluntary for those earning up to $150,000/year and compulsory above that amount.

In a last ditch effort to help the university stay afloat, an emergency fund was launched to support the most vulnerable members of the AUB community, and help ensure the survival of the university and its medical center.

With mass layoffs taking over the country, it seems as though Lebanon is shifting towards a downward spiral with no end in sight.

Do you feel this is a case of financial mismanagement or a byproduct of the economic crisis?
