MP Elie Ferzli Makes Disgustingly Sexist Remark In Parliamentary Session
Following the parliamentary session that was held on September 30th, the Legal Agenda published a series of noteworthy comments and remarks that were made by our esteemed members of parliament during the session.
Among the discussions published was an extremely sickening remark made by Deputy Speaker of Parliament MP Elie Ferzli, to the Minister of Justice in Lebanon’s caretaker government Marie Claude Najem. The discussion was about article 47 of the code of criminal procedure.
Loosely translated, the conversation went as follows:
Minister Najem: “We need to remove this sentence from above.”
*MP Ferzli, interrupting*
MP Ferzli: “Remove it from the top and put it in the bottom.” Then he laughs.
Aside from the lack of basic conversational skills that dictate we steer clear from interrupting others, Ferzli’s interruption was a disgusting sexist remark with sexual innuendo to make the minister uncomfortable. Would he have asked a man to “remove it from the top and put it in the bottom”?
Worst part is that Ferzli is the deputy speaker of the parliament, i.e. he holds the second highest ranking position in the parliament.
How can we expect change in a country led by people like Ferzli?
