Lebanon Marks Beirut Explosion Anniversary with Rage in The Streets

A year ago, our capital was decimated, 218 people were killed and 7,000 were wounded including 1,000 children. Hundreds were left with physical disabilities, tens of thousands were displaced, and an estimated $4.6 billion dollars worth of damage was left behind.

After 365 days, hundreds of people took the streets in various locations in Beirut to protest against authorities’ failure to hold any officials accountable, asking for all immunities to be lifted.

Protesters moved from the Port to Downtown Beirut and gathered outside the entrance to parliament, calling for accountability.

In tandem, a group of protesters broke into the main building of Électricité du Liban in Mar Mikhael, prompting the riot police as well as the army to violently intervene to evacuate the building.

Meanwhile, security forces, whose salaries paid in the Lebanese Lira have shriveled to be worth less than $100 a month, fired tear gas and deployed water cannons attempting to disperse the mostly peaceful protestors.

A year after the blast, survivors are still grieving, angry, suffering, pushing for truth, and awaiting answers.

Today and every day, we think of the victims and their families.
