EDL Announces Complete Blackout

State-owned Electricité du Liban announced yesterday that Lebanon will experience a complete blackout (compared to the one hour of power per day) due to sudden low frequency after residents across the country hijacked its infrastructure.

The statement claimed that although EDL made every effort to secure a minimum levels of electrical supply, the institution lost control of eight transformers after citizens hijacked its facilities.

According to the statement, Lebanon will face total blackout very soon if security forces do not manage to regain control of power plants and carry out urgent maintenance work on all the facilities, namely Horj, Basta, Tyre, Baalbek, Al-Masilah, Zahrani, Wadi Jilo, and Nabatiyeh.

The statement went on to add that EDL’s employees at the Horj transformer were threatened and prevented from performing their responsibilities which resulted in power cuts in the area. EDL appealed to the security forces to intervene immediately to regain control of these stations in order to preserve public safety.

Since the start of the summer, citizens were usually able to fall back on private generators that make up for the state’s shortcomings, but this has recently become unattainable due to the lack of diesel.
