Lebanese-Born Molecular Biologist Wins Nobel Prize

This year, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for their joint work on how the human body senses heat.

Dr. Patapoutian was born in 1967 in Beirut, after which he moved to U.S to pursue his studies. He was previously awarded the prestigious Kavli Prize in Neuroscience by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He is currently a professor at Scripps Research in California.

Dr. Patapoutian and Dr. Julius’ work was focused around the molecular basis for sensing heat or touch.

In 1960, Sir Peter Medawar was the first half-Lebanese to win Nobel Prize in Medicine.

It is a shame that our country does not value our very own scientists.
