Lebanese Ministry of Labor Launches Job Platform….In Qatar

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup, the Lebanese Minister of Labor Mostafa Bayram launched a platform for Lebanese people to apply to jobs in Qatar.

Bayram had previously met with the Qatari Minister of Labor, where they agreed on the finer points of this job program. According to Bayram, “any citizen, worker and graduate” can register on the platform and work in fields ranging from healthcare to hospitality to other auxiliary services during the World Cup period.

Bayram stressed that this was not an immigration platform, instead labeling it as an opportunity for Lebanese people to make some money while supporting Arab cooperation. It is unclear if the platform will continue operating after the world cup.

The Ministry also reached an agreement with Director General of General Security Abbas Ibrahim to facilitate the visa process for people on the platform.

Needless to say, the launch of this platform did not go off without a hitch. The privacy advocacy group SMEX detailed data protection issues on the platform just hours after it launched.

Some Lebanese people also voiced their complaints about the platform, stating that the ministry should be working to provide jobs at home and not force their citizens out. The accelerated passports have also rubbed people the wrong way, as the nearest appointment for a new passport remains some time in 2024.
