Nadine Labaki Embroiled In Capernaum Controversy

Lebanese director and actress Nadine Labaki has been embroiled in legal controversy surrounding her hit-film Capernaum. According to local reports, a complaint has been filed against Labaki by Turkish director Andaç Haznedaroglu regarding the plot of the drama.

Haznedaroglu claims that Labaki’s film was a little bit too inspired by her own 2017 film, The Guest. The director claims that she had asked Labaki to be a director on The Guest, but the offer was declined. She believes that the director went on to steal some of the ideas presented in Capernaum, which came out a year after the Guest, and received high acclaim at its premiere in Cannes.

The complaint has been allegedly taken up by the public prosecutor at Beirut’s Court of Appeals who has charged Labaki with intellectual property violations and fraud under Article 86 of Law 75/99.

Labaki released a statement denying the allegations and claiming to not have been informed of any charges. The filmmaker’s release states that she believes Haznedaroglu’s claim is arbitrary and connected to Capernaum’s groundbreaking international success. She also says that the story’s spread through the press, and some outlets choosing to frame the case as a conviction, amounts to slander and a direct attack on her character. Labaki has also confirmed that she filed a complaint against Haznedaroglu for slander and libel.

So far, no official comment has been released regarding Labaki’s charges. We will keep you updated as this case progresses.
