New Electric Buses Hitting the Streets of Beirut Soon, Here’s What We Know

Lebanon is slowly growing its long‑neglected public transportation system. One of the most talked‑about developments recently is the introduction of electric buses running between Jbeil and Beirut, a project happening with support from the UNDP. The buses were provided through a grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under a project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in close coordination with national and local government partners.

The move taps into a broader push to modernize the country’s transport options, make commuting less of a headache, and cut down on emissions in a place where congestion is a daily reality.

The plan is to provide a cleaner and more modern alternative, alongside the public bus system that was launched back in 2024. A switch to electric can help reduce emissions and make rides less stressful for commuters.

Right now, the electric buses are still in early stages of deployment and set to be on the road as of March. Official figures put public bus usage at around 7,000 passengers per day across the new network. The government has signalled plans to expand routes and improve transport formally.

This step is an encouraging start, and we hope that electric buses will expand to include more areas in Lebanon. For more updates on the new electric bus system in Beirut, make sure to browse the #News section on our website.
