There are so many ways to welcome spring in Lebanon. Some of us stock up on janerik, while others go for hikes across the country to watch the flowers bloom. But did you know that one of the most delightful ways to welcome spring in Lebanon is by going rose-picking?
With the rose season in Qsarnaba kicking off, Emm Adnan opens her home and heart to anyone who loves nature, heritage, and seasonal traditions rooted in rural Lebanese life.
Known for making the finest homemade mouneh, she shares the secrets of harvesting roses and the traditional distillation process that gives us rose water during this season.
The experience starts with hand-picking Damask roses, known for their strong scent and wide use in Lebanese homemade products. You get to go through the full seasonal process up close, step by step, and discover how it all comes together.
Then comes the next stage, cleaning and preparing the roses for the karka, the traditional Lebanese distillation pot used to extract pure natural rose water from aromatic plants.
Water is added to draw out the essence of the roses. Over a slow flame, the distillation begins, and you’ll probably end up smelling like roses for the next few days.
