Ancient Roman-Era Burial Grounds Uncovered Beneath Achrafieh

An ancient Roman-era necropolis has been discovered beneath Achrafieh, according to WANDERLEB, a cultural heritage platform uncovering Lebanon’s lesser-known stories.

A necropolis is an ancient burial ground that often contains multiple tombs, crypts, and funerary monuments. The term comes from the Ancient Greek phrase meaning “city of the dead”. It’s typically describes large cemeteries located outside the walls of ancient cities.

The recently uncovered rock-cut burial chamber in Achrafieh spotlights Lebanon’s rich history. The site offers insight into the communities that once lived here and the ways they honored their dead centuries ago.

Beneath its streets and buildings lie traces of countless generations, with each discovery adding another chapter to the city’s long history. What makes this burial chamber especially noteworthy is its rarity. Many similar sites have disappeared over the past few decades as urban development reshaped large parts of the capital, leaving few examples behind.

Tony Lahoud, who will oversee the restoration of the heritage building, said that the Directorate General of Antiquities is currently carrying out excavation and documentation work at the site. Additionally, the property owner is working closely with authorities to ensure the preservation of the archaeological remains.
