Every Beirut bookworm’s favorite kind of news: a new library and cultural space has just opened in Hamra!
More than just a place to find your next read, Folk Beirut is a hybrid bookstore and cultural space with a beautifully curated a book selection, study areas, gift shop, and a program of literary and poetry events.
There are many personal touches added to this library that makes it feel like home. The project actually began at home as an intimate gathering for people to share books and conversation before expanding into the city to become the space it is today.
What makes Folk Beirut stand out is the poetic meaning behind its name. “Folk” is inspired by the Arabic word fulk (meaning an ark or vessel).
Rather than just a ship meant to go from place to place, Folk is a place that carries books, stories, ideas, and memories. It builds on Beirut’s deep historical connection to the sea and to the world, an identity associated with the blue horizon of the Mediterranean.
In this sense, Folk Beirut is an extension of the city’s maritime spirit. A small vessel anchored in the heart of Hamra, carrying books, ideas, and diverse cultural experiences.
It’s the kind of space where you can quietly read, pass by with a friend, or meet new people. Folk Beirut is open to everyone, bringing readers, writers, students, and anyone who might thrive in these creative spaces.
The space also includes areas that will soon feature rotating photography and art exhibitions. These exhibitions will transform the walls into spaces that preserve and showcase visual memory, complementing the stories told by the books lining the shelves.
In a neighborhood known for books, cafés, and cultural life, Folk Beirut brings a more personal energy to Hamra.
