Ministry of Environment Launches Mona Khalil Award for Environmental Commitment

Lebanon’s Ministry of Environment has introduced a new award celebrating people and organizations working to protect the country’s natural environment. Named after conservationist Mona Khalil, the Mona Khalil Award for Environmental Commitment will recognize projects and initiatives that make a meaningful contribution to conservation and biodiversity in Lebanon.

Mona Khalil was more than an environmental activist. For decades, she became a familiar name to anyone who cared about Lebanon’s coastline and wildlife, dedicating her life to protecting endangered sea turtles and preserving one of the country’s most fragile ecosystems.

Through the reserve she founded in Mansouri, generations of visitors, volunteers, and children learned about the importance of conservation and the role each person can play in safeguarding nature.

Khalil sadly succumbed to injuries sustained in an enemy airstrike on her home in Mansouri, Tyre, on June 20, 2026. Her work continues to live on through the landscapes she helped protect and the people she inspired along the way.

Naming this award after her turns it into more than just a recognition program. It’s a tribute to a woman whose lifelong commitment showed that protecting nature leaves a lasting impact on entire communities. Through the new award, the Ministry hopes to spotlight environmental efforts that go beyond awareness and create tangible, long-term change.
